Earthquake in Haiti

On January 12, 2010 a devastating earthquake struck off the coast of Haiti. The earthquake measured on the Richter Scale a 7.0 causing major damage and a huge loss of life. Survivors describe the remains as looking like a battlefield the destruction is so bad. Rescue crews are still finding people buried alive; however they have also found thousands dead.

The epicenter of the quake was 16 miles west of Port-au-Prince near Leogane. There was also a series of aftershocks between 5.0 – 5.9. This quake was felt by most of the Caribbean and was the worst earthquake in over 200 years. Unfortunately this quake was predicted back in 2008; however how do you prepare for something like this.

There is no communication in Haiti accept by satellite radio. Rescue efforts have been slowed by acts of violence and looting. Those that have survived the earthquake are trying to stay alive before supplies can arrive. Supplies have been coming from around the world in to Port-au-Prince non-stop since the quake. If you want to donate here are a few organizations accepting contributions: www.unicefusa.org; www.SavetheChildren.org/donate;  www.WorldVision.org/Contribute; www.SalvationArmy.org/Haiti. There are many others as well, check your local listings or American Red if you would like to help.
