Arnold Palmer's Early Years Arnold Palmer, nicknamed The King was a trailblazer for professional golf. Deacon Palmer, his father taught him how to play as he allowed his son to follow him on the course at Latrobe County Club where he was the pro and green keeper. Palmer went to Wake Forest University on a golf scholarship; however he did not stay due to the death of a close friend. Instead Palmer enlisted in the Coast Guard and ended up spending three years in the service. Palmer worked on his golf skills and mentally got his life back together and returned to competitive golf. http://www.golfkingblog.com/blog/2009/12/28/the-early-years-of-arnold-palmer.html
