Injuries strike early to Team USA hopefuls when Kevin Pearce was rushed to the hospital after a training accident. Pearce, a 22 year old snowboarder from Norwich, Vermont was practicing on the half pipe in Park City, Utah when the accident happened. He was preparing for the qualifying of the Olympic Team in Mammouth Mountain, California.
Snowboarding has been a sport dominated by the young American athletes. Pearce was considered a contender as well as returning champion Shaun White. Olympic coach Mike Jankowski explained Pearce was trying to perform a double cork which is extremely difficult. This trick consists of a twisting double back flip. Most of the top male boarders will be trying this new trick to impress the judges. Pearce went into this trick with too much gusto and he hit the edge of the half pipe above his eye. He was unconscious when taken to the hospital with a significant concussion. Pearce may undergo surgery as his injury is considered serious and critical.
