Avatar is written and produced by James Cameron, native of Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada. After several successful movies such as The Terminator, Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Titanic Cameron turned his efforts to documentaries and the development of digital 3-D Fusion Camera System. The science fiction Avatar was created using the new Fusion Camera System technology. Currently Cameron’s movies have grossed $3.7 billion worldwide. On opening day Avatar earned $27 million. There are only two other movies that have grossed more on opening day; I Am Legend starring Will Smith and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
It has taken Cameron over fourteen years to create this movie, including the technology to make this movie what it is. Avatar is the story of a disabled ex-Marine who is called to help when his twin brother is killed. Only his DNA will match with the alien body Avatar. The movie takes place on the jungle moon of Pandora. Sam Worthington stars as Jake Sully and Zoe Saldana is Neytiri, the warrior princess. Other cast members are Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, Wes Studi as Eytukan, Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch, Michelle Rodriguez as Trudy Chacon, Matt Gerald as Corporal Lyle Wainfleet and Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge.
Avatar is expected to get nine nominations at the Academy Awards including: best picture, music score, director, film editing, art direction, song, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects. Avatar was released in theaters December 18, 2009. Check your local listings for show times.
