Visit a Zoo

A great American pastime for both young and old is visiting a zoo! There is so much to see and to learn about at a zoo. There is nothing better to see an animal in its natural habitat; however zoos have simulated their natural habitats so people can enjoy animals they would never get a chance to see in their lifetime.

The Smithsonian National Zoological Park is known for the Great Cats exhibits. There are Sumatran tigers, African lions and a Cheetah Conservation Station.  The cats are among the most endangered species. The Philadelphia Zoo has a brand new Avian Center which you can walk through as the birds are all around you. The San Diego Zoo is famous worldwide with over 4,000 animals and one of the few that have the giant panda. Most of the best zoos have one thing in common, they are going cage less to give a more natural experience, separating exhibits with moats and natural barriers.

One of the up and coming zoos is the Columbus, Ohio zoo which houses Beco, the baby Asian elephant who was born March 27, 2009. Zoos are not just a summer time event. During the winter zoos have other activities as well. There are light displays with holiday music, ice skating and lunch with Santa. Family memberships are an economical way to spend time together. They give you free admission into the zoo whenever it is open, free or reduced parking, magazine or newsletter, exclusive invitation to member only events and 10% off in the gift shop.
