2009 Heisman Winner

For the first time in Alabama school history the 75th Heisman Trophy is awarded to Alabama’s running back Mark Ingram. The competition was outstanding with Toby Gerhart of Stanford finishing 2nd and Colt McCoy of Texas finishing 3rd in the Heisman race. Now Ingram and McCoy will meet again for the BCS National Championship Game January 7, 2010.

Mark Ingram is from Flint, Michigan however he decided to go to Alabama. He is 5’10” and weighs 212 pounds. As a freshman for the Crimson Tide, Ingram led the team in touchdowns with 12. Now as a sophomore he is a record setter once again. In a win against South Carolina at home, Ingram set a rushing record and individual season best of 246 yards. A week before the Heisman award Ingram had 3 touchdowns and 113 yards defeating Florida for the SEC Championship. Ingram led the Crimson Tide to a perfect 13-0 season with 1,542 yards rushing.

This was the tightest Heisman race every with only 28 points separating first and second place. Ingram was very emotional after learning he had won the Heisman Trophy. His mother and grandparents and coach Nick Saban were all there to support him; however his father was not as he is in prison awaiting sentencing in a nearby New York prison. After his emotional speech and enjoying the moment Ingram realizes that he has not finished his season yet. He and his team will resume practice and get ready for the upcoming championship game.
