South Carolina History The Province of South Carolina was formerly part of the Province of Carolina and was part of the original 13 colonies. South Carolina gained Admission to the Union May 23, 1788 which was the 8th state in the Union. During the Revolutionary War the state fought over 137 battles. It was during this time that the Palmetto became the State Tree on June 23, 1776. The fort built of palmetto logs withstood the British cannons until their retreat. Because of the many battles fought South Carolina lost most of their textile industry.
