Snowboarding Basics

Before you can start snowboarding you must ask yourself a few questions. Before you can buy your equipment you need to know what type of terrain you are going to be on and what is your style? The three styles are free-ride, freestyle and alpine. Once you have determined this you can buy your board, boots and bindings. As a beginner you may want to take a few lessons before hitting the slopes to learn the fundamental skills and proper techniques of stopping and sliding.

You must dress in layers for snowboarding so you have the flexibility in movements. You can always add or remove clothing as the weather changes. Your first layer should be polypropylene or similar to wick moisture away from your body. The second should be for warmth, like wool; and the third is your waterproof layer to protect you from the elements. Don’t forget the gloves, sunglasses or goggles and a helmet is a must. If you are not comfortable you may even want to wear wrist guards.

There are always risks involved with sports and activities. To protect yourself from injury and danger you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. Learn to read the resort trail maps and signs. When using the lifts it can be difficult at first for beginners. Be sure to follow all safety rules getting on and off the lifts. Snowboarding is a physical sport and you should rest often, as this will also help to prevent injuries.
