Originally called the Lesser Newfoundland is now the most popular dog breed today known as the Labrador Retriever. This breed of dog originated in Newfoundland, Canada and used as a fishing dog. Another name was the St. John’s Water Dog. Labradors have a resistance to cold waters and webbed paws which made them good in the water. Labrador Retrievers are used as hunting dogs, sporting dogs, show dogs and are great for the family pet. Genetic colors of Labradors are black, yellow and chocolate. Traditional size of the male Labrador is 60-79 pounds and 22” -28” tall.
