Vancouver, British Columbia will be the site of the next Winter Olympics from February 12-28, 2010. It is officially called the XXI Olympic Winter Games. The Winter Olympic Games are every four years and feature sports on ice or snow. Look for the official mascot family pin of Sumi, Quatchi and Miga. The traditional lighting of the Olympic flame will take place at the Opening Ceremony and burn throughout the games. At the completion of the games it will be extinguished signifying the end of the games.
There are currently 25 nations who have qualified athletes to compete in the games with expectations of up to 80 nations competing in the games. There are 86 different events for the 2010 Winter Olympics with some of the more popular events being: figure skating, ice hockey, alpine skiing, bobsleigh, short track speed skating and luge. The United States generally has a good contingency in the figure skating events and men’s and women’s ice hockey. The United States is expected to bring home a few medals in these sports.
Some of the venues will be in the nearby town of Whistler, British Columbia. The Olympic Village is in False Creek that will house over 2,800 athletes. Tickets and packages for the 2010 games are currently available to purchase. With less than 300 days until the opening ceremony Vancouver is still putting the finishing touches on some of the venues. They will be using over 25,000 volunteers to help make sure your experience at the XXI Winter Olympic Games is safe and enjoyable!
