Game six of the 2009 World Series belongs to the New York Yankees in front of their home crowd of 50,315! Beating the Phillies with a score of 7-3, the Phillies could not muster any offense with Andy Pettitte on the mound. There was a lot of pressure on the Phillies to repeat as Champions. Phillies will be back again next year with many of their core players including Cliff Lee, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Jayson Werth and Shane Victorino.
Most Valuable Player was Hideki Matsui, the first ever Japanese player to ever win this prestigious award. Matsui tied the World Series record with 6 RBIs. His series stats were just as impressive with a batting average of .615, on base percentage of .643 with 8 hits including one double, three home runs, one walk and 8 RBIs. Derek Jeter, shortstop and Mark Teixeira, first baseman for the Yankees were named to the Rawlings American League Gold Glove team.
The Yankees were very aggressive obtaining high salary players like CC Sabathis, Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett. Some people say the Yankees bought this championship with the highest payroll in baseball making it impossible for other teams to compete. The Yankees will also have many of the same players returning next year and will be in contention once again. This makes the 27th World Series for the New York Yankees, the last being in 2000. It is the first World Series victory for Coach Joe Girardi with the Yankees after missing the playoffs last season.
