Marine Corps Birthday

November 10, 1775 a legacy is born! The founding of the Marine Corps took place in Tun Tavern in Philadelphia during the American Revolution. The committee of Continental Congress drafted a resolution for two battalions of Marines to fight for independence. Samuel Nicolas was the newly appointed Commandant of the Marines and Robert Mullan, Tun Tavern’s owner was the first captain and recruiter for the Marines.

This year is the 234th Birthday of the Marine Corps. General James T. Conway, 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps invites all active duty and retired Marines and their families to participate in the official celebration of the Marine Corp Birthday. Women will wear a formal evening gown that should be floor length. The Marines will be in their dress uniform. Each Ball will have a distinguished guest speaker to start the evening. The United States Marine Band will provide the ceremonial music with bugle calls by the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps.

The Marine Corps is part of the Department of Defense and the Department of the Navy. The Marines are one of seven branches of the United States uniformed services. They have fought in every war and conflict since the creation of the Corp. They are highly trained and live by several creeds, it is a brotherhood. The United States Marine Corps has approximately 40,000 reserve Marines and just over 203,000 active duty Marines. Every year November 10, current and retired Marines celebrate the birthday of the brave spirit of the Marine Corps which defends our country. Semper Fidelis!
