The Columbus Blue Jackets had their best start yet winning five of the first six games played. However, after the west coast trip losing four out of five games has dropped them in the standings. Then losing to the Stanley Cup Pittsburg Penguins in the fashion they did was truly upsetting to fans. Being up 3-1 late in the third period Pittsburg scored 2 goals in less than 2 minutes to tie the game. Columbus ended up losing in a shootout. This had to disappoint to the players because they played well until the end of the game.
The Blue Jackets have been plagued by injury early as they have been without the services of forwards Fredrik Modin and Andrew Murray. Jared Boll was out with a head injury early in the season has now returned. Also injured is defenseman Jan Hejda, with Mike Commodore returning from injured reserve. Fans are looking forward to seeing the sixth round draft pick last year, 19 year old rookie Nikita Filatov play.
Since the arrival of head coach Ken Hitchcock in 2006 we have seen much improvement in the Blue Jackets. They are still a very young team and learning as they grow. Last year the Blue Jackets made their first Stanley Cup playoffs, losing in the first round. There is still a lot of hockey left to play so let’s hope the Blue Jackets learn from their early mistakes and can make another appearance in the race for the Stanley Cup!
