The 34th Marine Corps Marathon will be held in Washington D.C. on Sunday October 25, 2009. This marathon is 26.2 miles through Washington D.C. and Arlington, Virginia. This is the 5th largest marathon in the United States and is also referred to as The People’s Marathon because there is no prize money awarded. Colonel Jim Fowler is the originator of this event, in part to promote community good will and to give local Marines a marathon to qualify to race in the Boston Marathon.
The weekend offers many events including the Health and Fitness Expo featuring over 200 exhibitors. Products range from nutrition and food samples, running apparel, training guides, licensed products and entertainment. This event is also free to the public. Saturday evening is the Carbo dinner which includes a pasta buffet, salad, dessert, drinks and entertainment. The featured speakers at this event are Katharine Switzer and Roger Robinson.
You can follow your friend or family member as they run the marathon on the official web site of MCM or sign up for text updates as well. At the completion of the race participants are invited to the Finish Festival were you can link up with family. You can also get a free massage by Massage Envy and Verizon has free phone call center. Don’t forget the Beer Garden and Nature’s Peak Smoothies. For all participants that finish the race, USAA (United Services Automobile Association) presents a Finishers Coin. This is to recognize the racers outstanding accomplishment and rewarding excellence as a military tradition.
