Volunteer Work

Volunteer work in any organization has many rewards. We are not talking about monetary reward, but the feeling you get when you can truly help someone. Even an animal that may not be able to fend for its self, it is very gratifying to know you could help the adorable furry friend. Many retirees fill these positions as it helps to fill their time, enables them to socialize and gives them a purpose. Volunteer work is not just for retirees, there is a rewarding experience waiting for you!

Many college applications are now looking to see what our young people have done in their communities to make them stand out from their peers. Volunteer work is a graduation requirement for some high schools to prepare them for the future. Grades are not the only thing they are judged on. Many opportunities exist in soup kitchens through local churches. Many high school and college students volunteer abroad during natural disasters or through church programs.

Some common places to volunteer would be local hospitals, Habitat for Humanity, animal shelters, Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs, the American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels and Special Olympic programs. If you are going to volunteer, make sure you find the right fit. If you are not happy in what you are doing it reflects in your work, regardless if you are being paid or not. How you act is a reflection on yourself and when in the public you need to be on your best behavior.
