Halloween is a holiday that is celebrated on October 31. Some people don’t see Halloween as a holiday; however Halloween has Christian roots and is celebrated on the holy day of All Saints Day. Not all countries celebrate this holiday; however it is very popular in the United States. Traditionally Halloween represents witches and devils, ghosts and skeletons. Costumes are based on characters from horror movies. Costume sales represent millions of dollars for this one day holiday.
Symbols and activities associated with Halloween are the colors orange and black, carving jack-o-lanterns and setting them out for others to see. Skeletons and black cats, ghouls and goblins are popular Halloween decorations. The most popular activity is trick or treating or beggars night when the kids dress in costumes and go door to door for begging for treats. Going to haunted houses and telling spooky stories around the campfire are popular activities also. Costume judging for prizes and having parties where you bob for apples.
Popular foods associated with Halloween are apples, candy apples and caramel apples. Hot apple cider and candy corn are a must for the fall holiday. Anything made with pumpkin such as pumpkin pie, roasted pumpkin seeds and pumpkin bread. Some choose to trick-or-treat for UNICEF getting small donations instead of food to help children around the world. This is a great way for young people to learn to help others not as fortunate. Halloween isn’t just for kids; adults dress up in costumes and celebrate as well.
