2009 NHL Season

With the 2009 NHL season getting ready to start teams had to submit final rosters September 30. The top four draft picks have made the teams final rosters including John Tavares of the New York Islanders, Victor Hedman of Tampa Bay Lightning, Evander Kane of Atlanta Thrashers and Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche. Others that were lucky enough to make a team were Dmitry Kulikov of the Florida Panthers and Ryan O’Reilly who was picked 33rd in the draft is on the roster for the Colorado Avalanche.

Other news in the NHL regards the sale of the Phoenix Coyotes. A week before the season gets underway; head coach Wayne Gretzky submitted his resignation. We will have to wait and see how this affects how the Coyotes play. Of course the biggest question of all; is will the Pittsburgh Penguins be repeat winners of the Stanley Cup? Sidney Crosby needs to stay healthy and he is going to start the season with a groin injury. Other teams to watch will be San Jose, Detroit, Boston and maybe a wild card young team Columbus Bluejackets.

As the season also gets started the NHL and the Players Association supports Cancer Awareness. Each of the 30 NHL teams will select one home game in October designated as Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness night. In combination with local cancer organizations through raffles, team merchandise, contests and promotional giveaways the evening will be dedicated to cancer awareness.  What a wonderful way to give back to the community.
