Eating Right For Sports

We all know that eating the right foods is healthy for you, but did you know that they may actually help you to perform better as well? Something to keep in mind when it comes to exercising is that eating foods that are healthy for you before a workout or playing a sport may help you to perform better and eating the wrong ones may cause you to perform poorly.

Let's talk about foods that are ideal to eat as pre-exercise foods. Foods that are high in protein need to be included in your pre-exercise workout. You will also want to include foods that are considered to be complex carbs such as fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread or rice. The reason it is important to include complex carbs is because they are slow burning, which helps to keep your blood sugar levels balanced. Yogurt smoothies that contain fresh fruit work out great as a pre-sporting snack.

Keeping your body hydrated is half the battle when it comes to playing sports or exercising. Water is one of the healthiest things that we can offer our bodies. Make sure that you drink plenty of water before, during and after any sporting event. You definitely want to stay away from caffeinated beverages while playing sports since they are a known cause of dehydration. As well, if you are going to be playing a sport for longer than 90 minutes, you may want to consider drinking a sports drink that contains added electrolytes.
