Toughness In Sports

What separates the winners and the losers in a particular sport? So often it is just a matter of mental toughness. Time and time again sport commentators marvel that a particular individual is the best even when they are smaller, older, less experienced, or physically weaker than others in their field. When you have supreme mental toughness you become an unstoppable force. Physical strength and lightning fast reactions are all greatly influenced by your attitude in mind and your spirit.

Mental toughness is doing whatever is necessary to get the job done including handling the demands of a tough workout, withstanding pain, or toughing an opponent out at the end of a race. Mental toughness is having a natural or developed psychological edge that enables you to to be more consistent and better than your opponents in remaining determined, focused, confident, resilient, and in control under pressure.

That old saying "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" is a great way to explain the mental side of a sport. Mental toughness can be seen as a desire or willpower. These athletes all have a level of excellence set much higher than that of other athletes. They were all ready to pay the price now.
