Coaches of a child’s sports team are usually parents who have decided to step out and volunteer their time and ability. Before they even step onto the field and begin a practice session, they must know they with other parents who think his/her child is perfect. Therefore, the coach has to teach him or herself to observe and make choices without prejudice.
The coach must make decisions based on how the child performs in the game. Judgments must be made according to the team’s objectives, not the coach’s individual thoughts. A balance must be maintained between being too firm or too undemanding of the child. An explanation to each child of what the coach wants will help children understand his or her purpose in the game.
A coach should be able to commend, guide and provide equal playtime for all the children. Positive reinforcement should be induced during every game to promote self-esteem. One basic goal is to help children gain knowledge, while also teaching them to love the game.
One personal thing you will be able to do while coaching the team is get to know the parents of the children your child associates with. This will help you in getting parents and other volunteers to assist with snacks, carpooling, equipment and uniforms. A coach should always be an example for the children and should not yell at the referees or umpires. Learn to ignore problem parents.
