Youth sports can be a positive venue for your young child to participate in. There are many choices for participation including soccer, basketball, hockey and baseball to name a few. Participating in youth sports can help a child become physically fit and teach them life-long skills to remain active throughout their life. Parents should encourage youth to participate in sports. However, the parents should emphasize having fun instead of winning being the top priority.
A youth league is underway and you, as a parent, feel you have the experiences and qualities to coach your kids’ sport. On the other hand, if you feel you are not confident enough in your coaching abilities to be a coach, but would like to help out the team, this is also beneficial. There are many other areas you could volunteer for including gym supervision, travel organization, equipment managing and game/gym scheduling. If this still does not suit you, then how about organizing a fundraiser for the team.
We all know how expensive youth sports can be and this would help keep the cost down for many families. Kids love a drink or snack sometimes after practice or games. You could be the parent that organizes this event. Many times youth sports have a difficult time recruiting referee’s for their games; maybe you have the knowledge to fulfill this role.
These are just a few examples of how parents can help with youth sports without being the head coach. If you are interested in any aspect of the sport you need to dedicated and be willing to do the job 100% as many coaches and young kids are counting on you. So go call the school, the community education director or the head coach to volunteer your time.
