Children love to play sports, but they can get discouraged easily if something goes wrong. It is important that parents keep their children motivated to play, so that they can continue playing the sport that they love so much.
If your child plans on playing a sport, it would be wise to help them practice that sport. You don't need to be great at the sport. You just need to let them know that you support them in that sport. Playing a game of catch is sufficient enough.
Don't try to coach them because you don't want them to get confused about who is the coach. Make it a habit of walking after each practice. That is a good time to help the child to talk about their day and any problems that they might be having when they are practicing. Let the child know that you support them no matter what happens.
Compliment your child on their good play and teamwork. It doesn't motivate a child to criticize them. You can help motivate your child by videotaping them practicing. This will allow your child to see themselves while they play. You can even have a movie night and play the video tape of your child for the whole family to watch.
Let your child know that playing a sport requires practice and dedication. Let your child know that all that is required of them is to play their best. It is not all about winning. It is also about fun. It is very important that your child realizes that winning is not everything.
