Supporting Your Child In Sports

When a child takes the step to get involved in sports what they need is for their loved ones to support them anyway they can. Taking a step like that can be very scary at first for a child, even as they approach their teens. They are putting themselves in a situation that will leave them vulnerable, to being accepted as a person and as a part of a team. This puts their abilities into the equation and may leave them very insecure without family in their corner. There are many ways to support and encourage a child as they take this step.

Take time to enjoy the idea that they want to be involved in a sport or activity. Always be encouraging when you talk about the new venture your child wants to go on. When family members are interested it helps them feel like they have made a good decision and they will try harder. Show up to an event and cheer the little guy or girl on. Cheering is also important because you let your voice out in support of what they have attempted and that you want to share it with the world.

Let the child do it his or her way, or the coaches way. You may remember doing things differently, but it's important for them to learn to follow rules, and time for parents to let their child spread their wings. Even taking part in a fundraiser or donating some time to help the coach with practice will make your child feel very special inside.

Win or lose, it's important to let your child know that you are proud of their efforts. Any way you can show support will benefit your family in the long run.
